Probably the easiest way will be to install Winrar. It should take over the zip file association, and all will be well.
Downloading with Firefox would be another option.

Is it actually naming them with the .rar extension? Winrar is the perfect thing to open pk3 files, and they should be associated with it. You don't have file extensions hidden still do you? (default in XP)

Try right clicking, and "save file as" see what happens then.

What program are pk3s associated with on your pc?

I don't know what are you really asking Sad

normally the pk3 its an acronym from (PacKage and the release of the game), so for quake one you got pk1 for quake 2 pk2 for quake 3 pk3 and for quake 4 pk4.

So to be honest you only need a compresion tool like PKZIP, winzip, winrar, etc and just change the suffix of the file, for the VMI of each quake release so if you have:

    for quake 3:

SomeFile.zip you just must named to SomeFile.PK3

    for quake 4:

SomeFile.zip you just must named to SomeFile.PK4

Note that I'm supposing you have problems with the download and windows its renamed or interpreting the pk3 like a rar file.

Dunno if this help, if I missunderstand your question my appologies, maybe I need an a kindergartden explanations of your problem.

    Regards

Ok, for anyone that doesn't know how to do this, here's a pic. I can't imagine NOT seeing file extensions.... having that off by default is retarded.
